STUDENT SUMMER EMPLOYMENT
DESCRIPTION: Position available for student to assist in long-term studies of hydrology and geomorphology in the mountains of western Oregon. Work is based at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest (HJA) near Blue River, Oregon.
DURATION: June - September 2000 (Starting and ending dates are negotiable.)
DUTIES: Assist field crew with the operation and maintenance of the small watershed studies at HJA. Duties include construction and repair of gaging stations; calibration, servicing, and repairs of instrumentation;
measurement of bedload accumulation in catchment basins; calibration of V-notch weirs; stream cross-section surveys; and the measurement of earthflow movement.
DUTY STATION: The official duty station is HJA. On-site housing will be provided.
TITLE, SERIES, GRADE, PAY: Hydrologic Aid/Technician, GS-1316-3/4 (GS-3 $8.71/hr , GS-4 $9.77/hr)
GRADE QUALIFICATION: GS-3: Applicants must have 6 months of general experience, or 1 year of education above high school with courses related to the occupation. GS-4: Applicants must have 6 months of general, and 6 months of specialized experience, or successful completion of 2 years of education above high school with courses related to the occupation.
GENERAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENT TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM (STEP): Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in at least a half-time academic course load in an accredited high school, technical or vocational, associate, baccalaureate, graduate, or professional diploma or certificate program. Be at least 16 years of age at the time of the appointment as long as in conformance with Federal, State, or local laws and standards governing the employment of minors. Have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or above on a 4.0 scale. Plan to return to school within a eight-month period. Not be the son or daughter of USDA employee (OR nepotism statement).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid States drivers license in good standing, and to qualify for a Goverment vehicle operator's license. Position requires field work spent walking, crouching, standing, bending, and lifting or carrying objects up to 80 pounds. Work will be done in streams and over rough uneven terrain often covered with brush, trees, and debris. Position requires working outdoors with exposures to climatic extremes, and vegetative and animal irritants (Poision oak,nettles, bees and wasps, etc).
DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: Experience with surveying equipment, power tools, chainsaws, and in building/construction work.
