Sced 294 - Investigative Science

a
Course description:  Sced 294 is a capstone course that emphasizes the process of science.  Through guided inquiry, the instructor helps students pose questions and answer them using a scientific approach.  The course focuses on a theme or topic depending on the instructor's area of interest and expertise.

Course format: The format of the course is a combination of laboratory and discussion/evaluation sessions.  An "experiment cycle" begins with students discussing what they need to know about the topic and deciding on a specific aspect to investigate.  The instructor provides guidance by asking leading questions, giving short lectures, and prompting possible experimental procedures.  In small lab groups, the students decide how their group is going to answer the question.  On subsequent laboratory days, the groups conduct their experiments, and gather and analyze data.  During followup discussions, the groups present their findings to the class for discussion and comparison with results from other groups.  The cycle is then repeated with a new question.

Prerequisites: Sced 201, 202, and 203 OR three GUR science courses.
